As part of your driving test you will be asked to 'Show and Tell' the examiner how you would carry out safety and maintenance vehicle checks on your car. You will need to answer TWO questions correctly. An incorrect answer will result in a MINOR driving fault.

1. Open the bonnet and identify where you would check your engine oil levels and how you would check your engine has sufficient engine oil levels

Yellow dipstick just above the engine compartment. Take dipstick out, wipe it clean, dip stick back into reservoir and pull back out. Check oil levels against min/max levels.

2. Open the bonnet and identify where the brake fluid reservoir is and show me how you would check you have a safe level of brake fluid.

3. Open the bonnet and identify where the engine coolant reservoir is and show me how you would check you have sufficient level of coolant.

4. Open the bonnet and identify where the windscreen washer reservoir is and show me how you would check you have sufficient washer level.  Far bottom right corner, small white container, check levels against min/max levels



5. Tell me how you would check your BRAKE LIGHTS are working?

Press the brake pedal and ask someone to help you check OR make sure you have a reflective surface behind your car, operate the brake pedal and look for a reflection.

6. Tell me how you would check your BRAKES are working properly?

Press the brake pedal, it should not feel spongy or slack.

7. Tell me how where you would find the information for the recommended tyre pressures for your car and how would you adjust them?

In the manufacturer's handbook. Use a reliable pressure guage, check all four tyres and the spare tyre, remember to replace the valve caps

tyre tread depth8. Tell me how you would check your tyres to ensure you have sufficient tread depth and that their general condition is safe to use on the road.

There should be no cuts or bulges on the tyre walls. There should be AT LEAST 1.6mm of tread across the central 3/4 section of the tyre and around the whole circumference.

 

 

 

9. Tell me how you would know there was a problem with your ABS (anti lock braking system)?

A warning light on the dashboard would stay illuminated.

10. Show or tell me how you would check your power assisted steering is working properly?

On starting the engine, the steering should be begin to feel light NOT heavy.

11. Show me how you would check your headlights and tail lights are working properly?

Turn the dipped headlights on in the car and walk around the car with the examiner.

12. Show me how you would switch your dipped headlights to main beam and how would you know the main beam was on whilst in the car?

Turn the dipped headlights on, switch the main beam on (usually located on the indicator stalk). A blue light will be illuminated to show the main beam is on.

13. Show me how you would switch your rear fog lights on and when would you use them?

Switch the dipped headlights on, then switch on the rear fog lights.  Only use the fog lights when visibility is less than 100m.

14. Show me how you check your parking brake for excessive wear?

Release the handbrake (apply footbrake if necessary to prevent rollback), reapply the handbrake (release footbrake if applied). The car should be SECURED once the handbrake is on.

15. Show me how you would adjust your head restraint to offer the best protection in the event of an accident?

The fullest part of the head restraint should be adjusted to be level with your eyes or top of ears.

16. Show me how you would set your demister controls to clear all your windscreens effectively?

Operate the demister control switches to clear the front (temperature, fan speed and vents) and back windscreens (one button).

17. Show me how you would check your horn is working?

Press the horn when in the car park/off road. (located in middle of steering wheel in the IpassU car.)

18. Show me how you would use your windscreen washers and wipers?

Operate the windscreen wiper stalk (located on the right of the steering wheel in IpassU car). You may need to turn on the electrics to demonstrate this.

19. Show me how you would check your direction indicators are working?

Press the hazard warning lights and walk round the car with the examiner.
